Who is gryphon in alice in wonderland

Lewis Carroll 's Alice. Book Category. The Gryphon, illustrated by John Tenniel. The Reader View of Wikipedia. The Gryphon is a fictional character devised by Lewis Carroll in the popular book Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. True to the conventional view of a griffin , he has the head, talons, and wings of an eagle and the body of a lion. Gryphon was ordered by the Queen of Hearts to take Alice to meet the Mock Turtle , which he did, and stayed with them for a long time, demanding that the Turtle to tell its history, as well as several poems.

The two creatures had gone on to explain certain features of their world which were apparently nonsense to Alice, before she and the Gryphon were summoned to a criminal trial, leaving the Mock Turtle behind. The Gryphon appears to be somewhat overbearing and dismissive of the obsessions and dismays of other characters, such as the Mock Turtle's sorrow and the Queen of Hearts' executions, neither of which according to the Gryphon have any basis in fact. He speaks with a slightly ungrammatical Cockney-like accent and makes demands of the Mock Turtle, which are obeyed despite the latter creature's implicit objections.

In addition, he is prone to making cough-like sounds written as "Hjckrrh! Despite being the strongest good-willed inhabitant in Wonderland , he was captured by the Queen of Hearts's forces and locked away deep in the Mad Hatter 's laboratory. Following the defeat of the Mad Hatter, the Gryphon was rescued from his cage and suggested that Alice permit him to be her commander, as he will gather the forces "whose allegiance [Alice's] courage and skill had already won" to fight against the Queen of Hearts.

It did not result into success, as the tainted state Wonderland was in forced Alice and the Gryphon to face the Queen of Hearts' most deadly soldier, the Jabberwock , alone. Alice did not arrive in time in Royal Rage however, and after a head-to-head showdown with the Jabberwock, the Gryphon was mortally wounded, causing Alice to slay the Jabberwock once and for all.

After slaying the Jabberwock, Gryphon told Alice that because she defeated the Jabberwock, she already avenged Gryphon's impending death and encouraged Alice to fight the Red Queen. Alice finds comfort in the fact that her two new companions are able to step back and critically observe the unusual aspects of Wonderland. The description of sea school reminds Alice of her own education, even though the subjects studied there are puns on the type of studies Alice might have pursued in school.

However, the Gryphon and Mock Turtle inevitably begin speaking nonsense. Though she has found creatures she feels comfortable with, she cannot understand them no matter how hard she tries.
