I am especially pleased to be appearing in Transposition along with Annegret Fauser and the other authors. I thought the Goffmanian perspective applied to sexual conduct would be good to think with — if you wanted to think about the nexus of culture and biology.
But I also thought that Goffman did not take us far enough into the topic. How then does cultural practice literally get incorporated? I was beginning to work on historical studies of a the interaction between science, music and emerging notions of gender difference and b gendered comportment and keyboard performance, both in Vienna circa DeNora and So, it was a heady time for studies of the body for me, and also, I think, for many people.
I was reading and learning a lot from the work of Stevi Jackson as referred to in the original article and later interacting with Stevi Jackson and Sue Scott in relation to their study of acting in sexual situations Jackson and Scott In addition, my colleague Robert Witkin had recently drafted an essay which was then, I confess, beyond my ability to comprehend it some of the ideas later appeared in [Witkin ] , and which I do not think he has ever published.
It pointed to later sociological perspectives on embodied cognition and affect to be sure. Thinking about this article, I remember being struck, while preparing it, that whenever I gave a talk on the topic seminars for LAMS, Milano, and Brussels for the ISA Sociology of Arts meeting I was offered many more tales, from — mostly — women about the role of music in their intimate, sexual lives. For me this was less about the sociology of sexuality and more about the grounded theory of how culture — and particularly non-propositional, non-representative forms of culture which music is, at least some of the time can be understood — and observed to — get into action.
She started playing piano aged three at the behest of her mother, whose own ambitions as a pianist had been thwarted by the outbreak of the second world war. Aged 11, Yano developed a passion for jazz, and with little live music on offer, convinced her father to take her to the local jazz kissa — the small listening bars where suited men smoked cigarettes over strong black coffees.
In a scene that feels lifted straight out of a Haruki Murakami novel, Yano was deposited at the counter, where she drank a Coca-Cola and spent hours lost in the music.
Yano describes her transition from high-school student to gigging jazz pianist to pop maverick with a seamlessness that underplays quite how impressive a musician she was. Yet, despite her predilection for pushing boundaries, Yano remains remarkably unassuming about her early work. Was it radical to be self-producing her albums? No, not really, she just thought it would be easier that way. She shrugs and says she never really thought about it.
YMO played on her records and Yano played with them on tour; influence flowed both ways. Jag Singh a patient at his own hospital. His alarm grew as he saw an X-ray of his pneumonia-choked lungs and colleagues asked his wishes about life support while wheeling him into Massachusetts General's intensive care unit.
Track live updates on coronavirus here. Coronavirus patients around the world have been rushing to join remdesivir studies that opened in hospitals in the last few weeks. Interest has been so great that the US National Institutes of Health is expanding its study, which has nearly reached its initial goal of patients. For most people, the new coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, which can include fever and cough but sometimes pneumonia requiring hospitalization.
The risk of death is greater for older adults and people with other health problems. Remdesivir is given through an IV. It's designed to interfere with an enzyme that reproduces viral genetic material. In animal tests against SARS and MERS, diseases caused by similar coronaviruses, the drug helped prevent infection and reduced the severity of symptoms when given early enough in the course of illness.
It's farther along in testing than many other potential therapies and the current studies could lead to regulatory approval. Gilead has given remdesivir to more than 1, patients on a case-by-case emergency basis, but more people ultimately will be helped if the company does the needed studies to prove safety and effectiveness, chief executive Dan O'Day wrote in a recent letter to the public.
