The idea of perfection, or even the pursuit of it, can become problematic when it comes to eating. There are a few problems that this pursuit can cause:.

Inability to give yourself credit for progress. Elimination of essential food groups or nutrients. Unfortunately, completely eliminating a macronutrient or food group often comes with nutrient deficiencies and its own health problems.

Development of disordered eating behaviors. At its worst, a perfectionistic attitude towards food can devolve into orthorexia or a clinically significant eating disorder. Poor diets contribute to an increased risk of lots of different chronic health conditions, and there are changes that our population as a whole should be making.

Eating enough fruits, vegetables, and whole plant foods. Do you criticize yourself even when you are learning something new? Do you expect yourself to do everything well at all times? Do you find yourself taking part in activities in which you have little interest to gain approval? Do you find that when you do something that satisfies you, your satisfaction is short-lived?

Have you been told by the people around you that you focus on the problems in life , and even if everything is okay you find something that bothers you? Self-improvement coach Celestine Chua shares with us the ultimate irony: extreme perfectionism may actually prevent us from being our best :. We become less efficient. Even when we are done with a task, we linger to find new things to improve.

This lingering process starts as 10 minutes, then extends to 30 minutes, then to an hour, and more. We spend way more time on a task than is required. We become less effective. Sometimes not only do the additions add no value, they might even detract from the end-product.

Our desire to perfect everything makes us over-complicate a project. This makes us procrastinate, waiting for the ever-perfect moment before we get to it. This perfect moment never strikes until it is too late. We miss the bigger picture.
